DETROIT (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Federal safety regulators are investigating buses made by Motor Coach Industries Inc. during the past 20 years because the drive shafts could fall out and cause the driver to lose control.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website Monday that two people have been killed and 50 injured in two crashes linked to the problem.
The investigation covers an estimated 4,000 MCI D-Series buses with a steerable rear axle. They were made from 1992 into this year. The drive shaft transfers power from the engine to the wheels.
Safety regulators say the parent of Dallas-based Greyhound bus lines, FirstGroup America, reported two drive shaft failures that caused crashes, resulting in injuries and deaths.
An investigation could lead to a recall. Messages were left for Motor Coach Industries spokesmen.
